Don’t ruin Cuba for me!
In a sure sign that the apocalypse approaches, the New York Times has published another article about the castro regime that is... well, credible.
In this one the reporter, David Gonzalez, interviews Cuban exiles that are self-described liberals (not part of the right-wing Batista oligarchy that seems to be exponentially larger in 2008 than it was in 1958 if you believe most MSM reports) and finds that they are dismayed at what American liberals think about Cuba.
Carment Pelaez, a playwright is one such Cuban-American. She wrote a one woman show called "Rum & Coke":
“When I started writing the play, I thought people just didn’t know what was happening in Cuba,” she said after the show closed its monthlong New York run last week. “But the longer I live here, the more I realized, they don’t care.”“They would rather keep their little pop revolution instead of saying it is a dictatorship,” Ms. Peláez said. “I had somebody come to me after a show and say, ‘Don’t ruin Cuba for me!’ Well, why not? They’re holding on to a fantasy.”
Cristina Martinez, another interview subject says:
“The image [of Cuba] is one of the defender of the oppressed and defender of just causes,” she said. “People who understand the Cuban reality know it is not like that. It is not something they would want for themselves or their own country. Or, they are opportunists who use Cuba as a symbol knowing full well what is happening.”
And lastly Enrique del Risco:
He knows to expect a dual riposte — yes, but what about universal health care and education?“At the root of that is a great belittling of Cubans,” he said. “It’s like we are some sort of little animals who only need a veterinarian and someone to teach us tricks and we’ll be fine.”
Forget global warming, Hell just cooled by one degree.

There's a great audio interview with Pelaez too on the second page of the article.

Henry,
That is an amazing article! The closest the New York Times has come to indicting itself, since it is precisely the New York Times that epitomizes and cheer leads the Castro apologetic mindset that the article is criticizing. What's more, its the first time that the Times admits that you can be a liberal and anti-Castro at the same time. The common notion is that only "foaming-at-the-mouth, right-winged Miami thugs" [which is how they describe any Cuban American who is anti-Castro regardless of political affiliation]can be anti-Castro.
Perhaps it is a sign that the ship is sinking and the rats are jumping off, but don't be surprised if the New York Times now comes out with 10 pro-Castro articles to follow this one. This is one of their favorite modus operandi's. They do this so they can have an escape route and say, "oh, but we are not pro-Castro look at this and this article that was critical of the regime!"
I say that if this type of article continues and if it becomes routine, then in deed Castro, Inc.'s days may be numbered.

I've attended talks with David Gonzalez here in NYC about Cuba. He has worked on the island and has no illusions about what's happening there. He's solid.

Well said.

It's going to take a hell of a lot more than this to improve the image of the NYT in my eyes. This sort of reporting should be the norm, not the exception. It's welcome, but it's only stating the truth, which is what any decent newspaper should be about 24/7.
The NYT is encrusted with so much shit when it comes to Cuba reporting that it would take heroic efforts to remove the filth. We're talking Hercules cleaning up the Aegean stables here, at least.

For instance, if the ALA (American Library Association) was covering up for and protecting a right wing dictatorship instead of Castro, Inc., how long do you think it would have taken for it to be a front-page story in the NYT? Why is that absolutely scandalous and incredibly hypocritical situation not being hounded to death by the MSM? You have one guess (and it's not even a guess).

I think something is certainly happening. Even in the midst of an onslaught of anti-embargo columns and op-ed pieces we are seeing reports like this one (the second in about a week from the NYT) and also from the Washington Post. These people are like I was in my 12 grade literature class, trying to behave and study like mad right before the end of the semester to salvage their grade. It didn't work for me and it won't work for them.

David Gonzalez is one of those cubano resentido types riding the waves to see where the ball falls and to save his job at the times he has written articles that although don't attack Miami Cubans too much he hasn't exactly been a champion of pro democracy either - he has said some silly things about exiles just to tow the NYT talking points. Sure, he is not as rabid as something you would find in the CPUSA newspaper but...
Is he even Cuban?
BTW, New York city is filled with commie Cuban Americans whose parents came here either before 59 or after the revolution. I know lots of them - many in the arts and education - not very nice people. This one NYC commie Cuban I know went to Cuba and made a film about her grandmother's death - she told me like it was something new that the "CIA tried and failed to kill Castro" too many times - she even held a Che look a like contest and party at a local NYC Protestant church to raise money to finish the film.
