Another "reform" - letters to the editor at Granma
So Reuters has spewed out their third article in two weeks about "reforms" in Cuba. Apparently, Granma is now publishing letters to the editor:
Cubans have a new vehicle to express their opinions: letters to the editor of the ruling Communist Party newspaper Granma.Letters for and against reforms under consideration by Cuba's new President Raul Castro were published by Granma on Friday.
One writer called for the elimination of the dual currency system, a major source of complaint among Cubans, who are paid in Cuban pesos but must buy many consumer goods in Cuba's hard currency Convertible pesos worth 24 times more.
What's really funny about the article is this quote from an unidentified "journalist" at Granma:
"The idea is to show the public what people think. It is the people that will write the letter," said a journalist at the newspaper, who asked not to be named.
Why emphasize that people write the letter? Isn't that intuitively obvious? And if they really want to show the public what people think, open up access to the internet, let Cubans travel, and let them speak openly on the street.

Well, I live in Fort Worth, TX and in today's letters to the editor in the Star Telegram there is a guy calling us selfish because according to him Cubans already held democratic elections and they chose to have a socialist government under raul, therefore that is their choice and the US should butt out of it. Some Americans should just stick to footbal and dancing with the stars.

Aww, Joaquin! Football and Dancing with the Stars are two of my favorite things! But I agree with you, not only is the average American ignorant of what's going on in Cuba, they also don't give a rip. A few weeks ago a colleague of mine actually said "I don't give a s**t about Cuba," to me. Sadly, he's not alone.

If it weren't so horrible, it would be laughable! The MSM is trying so hard to make these minuscule token "reforms" appear to be real reforms, a virtual PERESTROIKA!
I mean, give me a break! These "changes" are such non-stories that they should not even make it onto the back pages of a rag! What is it? Computers that are unaffordable are going on sale, farmers can now buy supplies and people have the right to write letters-to-the-editor to Granma. As if these letters-to-the-editor won't be censored. Oh, there might be a letter criticizing corruption, but never criticizing the regime.
