Waiting for snow, among other things...
Carlos Eire’s Waiting for snow in Havana is one of my all-time favorite books. The author and his book have been mentioned here many times before, but if any of you out there has yet to read it, I recommend you do so. The way Carlos Eire manages to bring together both the pain and the humor of being Cuban is remarkable in this seamless tome. It is one of those books that when you finish it, you feel you have enriched your life and given your Cuban identity a boost.
Loyola University’s student paper conducted an interview with Carlos, and it is well worth the read for those who have yet to read his book, as well as those who already have.

I bought this book and have no doubt it's as good as advertised, but for those with personal, first-hand experience of the trauma Eire went through, it may be too painful. That was my experience when I started reading it, and I put it aside and have not continued it. I'm sure I'm missing out, but I really didn't want to open up old wounds afresh. I expect its greatest utility is for those who only know what happened from what they've heard or read or been told (which may or may not have been accurate), and for those who know little or nothing of the tragedy.
