On this date in Guayaba History
The newly self-crowned king of Cuba, while on a visit to New York City in 1959, soltó tremenda guayaba!
Fidel Castro, leader of Cuba’s revolutionary government, got a roaring welcome in Washington, D.C., as he began a 10-day visit to the U.S. Before he returned to Cuba, he told a television audience that Cuba would side with the West in any conflict with Russia. “I am not a communist and do not agree with communism,” he said. “I am for democracy and not just the word democracy.”

Well, you know, politics is a nasty business, and sometimes you have to say or do dubious things to get what you want (like Garcia with Rangel), and we shouldn't get all judgmental, and we need to think about our image and stuff, and I'm OK, you're OK, and let's all just hold hands and sing something nice...maybe all the holier-than-thou "moderate" types will like us then. Or maybe not.
