Essay Contest

This is great, the Young America's Foundation sponsoring an essay contest based on Daniel J. Flynn's new book, A Conservative History of the American Left.

Essay Contest:

Young America’s Foundation is excited to announce A Conservative History of the American Left essay contest with more than $20,000 available in scholarships and prizes.

The essay contest is open to all full-time undergraduate students or high school seniors entering college in the fall of 2008. Participants are asked to answer the following question:

Can there be an American Left? Since Robert Owen made his July 4, 1826, Declaration of Mental Independence from the trinity of the most monstrous evils —private property, traditional religion, and marriage—the Left has crusaded against numerous American cultural markers. Freedom, faith, family, and flag seem essential to the American experience but are often under attack by the Left. Using examples from Daniel J. Flynn's A Conservative History of the American Left, craft a 1,200 word essay outlining ways that American leftists have at times sought to conform to the surrounding culture and at other times rebel against it, ultimately answering the question: Can there be an American Left, or must radicals—by virtue of an alien ideology—be forever consigned to operating outside of the American mainstream?

Prizes:

Grand Prize--$5,000 scholarship and waived tuition and travel to Young America’s Foundation’s 2009 National Conservative Student Conference in Washington, D.C. and the West Coast Leadership Conference in Santa Barbara, CA.

Alien ideology? Try a Russian totalitarian system in Cuba. If it hadn't actually happened, nobody would ever have believed it possible.

I keep on saying time and again, the only true Conservative out there right now, is running as an independent. Alan Keyes stands for the morals & principles, gifted to us by our Creator, that have been declining in this great nation of ours. We need to take back America from the Socialist "Democrats" and the NeoCon controlled "Republicans" both have utterly ravaged the constitution and ultimately will end up destroying our sovereignty in the pursuit of greed. Please help out in any way you can to get this great God fearing Constitutionalist, who was the assistant state secretary for Ronald Reagan and appointed Ambassador to the U.N. by Reagan, on the ballot and even further to the White House.

Good God! Alan Keyes is a disgusting, virulent homophobe. I hardly consider him to be a great American. If a white person were to say the same things about Black people that he says about homosexuals, they would never be taken seriously EVER! I think God has paid him back rather nicely by giving him a lesbian daughter. Otherwise, I'm not very fond of leftists either.

Keyes spoke against these reports on the Bill Haft radio show in October 2007. In response to a caller, Keyes said that he loves his daughter and that she knows she has a home with him. He asserted that he never cut her off and never would because it would be "wrong in the eyes of God." He also said he would not be coerced into "approving of that which destroys the soul" of his daughter. He contended that he must "stand for the truth [Jesus Christ] represents" even if it breaks his heart.
