A "blog" is not a "forum"
The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions. --Adlai Stevenson
There seems to be a over-flowing supply of nincompoopery going on in the Internet. I can name several prominent pseudo-intellectual nitwits who, having only one outlet to vent the frustration of a miserable existence on those of us who actually do something, and being deficient in even the most rudimentary understanding of what free speech is (as defined by the Founding Fathers), are hell-bent on misunderstanding basic facts about the blogosphere.
Take, for example, the basic differences between a "blog" and a "forum." Webster's defines a blog as:
a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer.
Clear? I thought so. It's a personal journal, "personal" being the operative word, where the writer(s) provides reflections, comments, and sometimes hyperlinks to other websites.
A "forum" has various meanings according to Webster's but these are the salient ones:
a public meeting place for open discussion [or] a medium (as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas.
So, let's recap. A "blog" is a personal journal, where the writer or writers can choose whether or not to provide commentary (or an outlet for commentary) on the writer's words. That implies that the writer or writers can choose whether a comment that is left on the blog can stay on or whether it is to be deleted. A "forum" is a place for open discussion including the venting of a multitude of opinions. So, that means that we can make this "online destination" either a blog or a forum. And, since we are not the Government, and since this is a private organization, we cannot "censor" anyone.
So now that we've gotten definitions out of the way, let's talk some numbers. Since we initiated moderated and/or authenticated comments, BabaluBlog.com has had 1,368 unique commenters. Of that total, 1,307 commenters are active in our database and can leave comments at their discretion -- and there are some that can leave comments that are not friendly to our cause. The remaining 61 commenters are banned from commenting. These 61 malcontents, imbeciles, idiots, liberals, leftists, commies, dialogueros, infiltrados, and general all-around assholes, represent a percentage of 4.459% of the total commenter universe. Those 61 -- and there may be repeats since we get those who want to continue their tirades with another legitimate email address that is authenticated by TypeKey -- cannot leave comments.
Why? It's very simple, really. It's a blog, stupid! It's not a forum! We, at our sole discretion, choose who can leave a comment or not. 4.459% of our total commenter universe who decide to come into this house and disrespect the owner and the other residents is not an unacceptable number. We're pretty damn tolerant if you ask me. And, most importantly, it puts the big lie to the pompous pretenders in the blogosphere who categorically and imperiously state that this blog "censors" people. Disingenuousness, combined with arrogance, is a deadly combination.
We cannot censor anyone, only the Government can. You (and you know who you are) have every right to express your opinion; but we also have every right to refuse to hear it.
So the next time someone pulls that "Babalu censors like fidel" crap, just call "bullshit" and throw the numbers at them. They don't lie, unlike some.

Well said. I love your discription of the 'malcontent', how true. They can drop dead for all I care. I'm currently reading "Intellectual Morons", by Daniel Flynn - quite an eye-opener. The more I read, the more I feel obligated to strike back at the Left's quest to eliminate anything or anyone that doesn't think like them. Bottom-line; we shouldn't be hesitant to 'fight fire with fire'. Keep up the good work.

George,
Welcome back!! As someone who has been reading this blog for a while now, I would like to say that IMHO, a "blog" is "personal" ... it's like the extension of someone's property, which has been opened to its community . . . and as such, Respect must always prevail, regardless of our opinions on what's posted. As far as I have seen, respectful disagreement has always been welcome in Babalu!
We are lucky to enjoy the freedom to access the Internet, read and participate in the blogs. Moreover, we are also free to agree or disagree with a post. When differing opinions are guided by respect, the result is a productive and insightful exchange!
Generacion Y has a post somewhat related to this post.
"En aras de que fructifique la polemica franca y el debate respetuoso es necesario aumentar el nivel de moderación en Generacion Y."
"Un poco de orden . . . aunque sin censura" (May 25, 2008)

I wish you well :) Melek

Rick (AKA the pope of the bloggers) disagrees with your definitions. He seems to think that he's the executive editor of all blogs.

And the biggest irony of all: Rick (a/k/a Rick the DIck, a/k/a Pope Pompous II) is not one of those banned on Babalu... We are such horrible censors, aren't we? I just left three comments on his "forum" to test whether or not Rick is a censor or not. I copied the HTML off the comment pages so I've got the proof... :-)

On cue, Pope Pompous II deleted the dirty words I left. I guess he "censored" me...

Cigar Mike, can you give us the legal definition of censorship? I'd like to at least educate our audience on what it is and what it's not.

George, you hit the nail on the head.
It has always amazed me that some people believe that just because you allow them to attend a party in your home, they suddenly have this inalienable right to take a crap in the living room. Every big party seems to have at least one of those.

The most beautiful thing is the email I received from a banned commenter who went by DJ Frustration. He called me an idiot and anyone who has a problem negotiating with the murderous raul castro a pussy and he has the balls to say that we are doing our argument a disservice by banning him.
Let me put this in terms that even the most retarded fuckhead can understand. We don't have any obligation to give equal time. WE ARE EQUAL TIME!
For 50 years the only media outlets were controlled by castro apologists, pseudo commies and real commies. They never gave us equal time. Fuck them, fuck DJ frustration (may his frustration continue) and fuck pope pompous.

Really excellent. Next time I get one of those whinny complaints I will just post a link to this post. It will save a lot of trouble to those of us that are harassed by self styled free speech defenders. Thank you.

My response to the commenter mentioned by Henry above. I make pretty much the same points, but they bear repeating since their thick cranium seems to be impervious to common sense:
Ethan,Let me respectfully repeat to you that we do censor anyone. "Censorship" can only be done by the government. It only takes a couple of readings of the constitution and some free-speech cases on the Supreme Court to understand that. This canard is thrown out to distract from the fact that it's the left, who has supported fidel and his regime for fifty years, and who has published outright lies about us here in Miami and about the murderers in Cuba. They never had the facts thrown at them until the advent of the alternative media and the Internet.
We do not tolerate comments that smack of propaganda and that support, in some way or the other, a regime that deserves no quarter.
If you are in disagreement with our views, so be it. BabaluBlog -- and any other blog for that matter -- is a private organization. We reserve the right to verify commenters, delete commenters, moderate comments, delete comments -- or not to have any comments at all. What then? How would would respond to a post you disagreed with? Send an email? And if I set my mail client to delete unsolicited email from a specific email address, what then? Your opinion would not even be read. If you had someone in your business or home that was doing something against your policy or against your wishes you'd just let him? I don't think so.
You have the right to express your opinion, but we also have the right to refuse to hear it. That, sir, is what America is all about. That is true freedom. As such, we cannot abdicate our inalienable right to control the content on our site. If we did that then it all we'd have is anarchy. And there's plenty of blogs out there that fill that bill, if that's your cup of tea.
George
P.S., calling us "pussies" didn't help either.
