Obama: The Homer Simpson Candidate

Great article by John Fund in the WSJ showing the number of "doh's" from Mr. Obama and how he's gotten a pass from the liberal media that supports him. Heck, the Today Show had Mr. Disloyal on yesterday for 45 minutes; why? Well cause it helps Obama. In any event, this article will make you wonder once again why the Dems always go with the loser -- with the candidate least likely to win ..... Doh!
For months, Barack Obama has had the image of an incandescent, golden-tongued Wundercandidate. That image may be fraying now.As smart and credentialed as he is, Sen. Obama is often an indifferent speaker without a teleprompter. He has large gaps in his knowledge base, and is just as likely to dig in and embrace a policy misstatement as abandon it. ABC reporter Jake Tapper calls him "a one-man gaffe machine."
Take the Auschwitz flub, where Mr. Obama erroneously claimed last weekend in New Mexico that his uncle helped liberate the Nazi concentration camp. Reporters noted Mr. Obama's revised claim, that it was his great uncle who helped liberate Buchenwald. They largely downplayed the error. Yet in another, earlier gaffe back in 2002, Mr. Obama claimed his grandfather knew U.S. troops who liberated Auschwitz and Treblinka – even though only Russian troops entered those concentration camps.
That hardly disqualifies Mr. Obama from being president. But you can bet that if Hillary Clinton had done the same thing it would have been the focus of much more attention, especially after her Bosnia sniper-fire fib. That's because gaffes are often blown up or downplayed based on whether or not they further a story line the media has attached to a politician.
When John McCain claimed, while on a trip to Iraq in March, that Sunni (as opposed to Shiite) militants in Iraq are being supported by Iran, coverage of the alleged blunder tracked Democratic attacks on his age and stamina. (In fact, Iran may well be supplying both Sunni and Shiite militants.) Dan Quayle, tagged with a reputation as a dumb blond male, never lived down his misspelling of "potatoe."
Mr. Obama, a former editor of the Harvard Law Review, has largely been given a pass for his gaffes. Many are trivial, such as his suggestion this month that America has 57 states, and his bizarre statement in a Memorial Day speech in New Mexico that America's "fallen heroes" were present and listening to him in the audience.
Some gaffes involve mangling his family history. Last year in Selma, Ala., for example, he said that his birth was inspired by events there which took place four years after he was born. While this gaffe can be chalked up to fatigue or cloudy memory, others are more substantive – such as his denial last April that it was his handwriting on a questionnaire in which, as a state senate candidate, he favored a ban on handguns. His campaign now contends that, even if it was his handwriting, this doesn't prove he read the full questionnaire.
Mr. Obama told a Portland, Ore., crowd this month that Iran doesn't "pose a serious threat to us," saying that "tiny countries" with small defense budgets aren't much to worry about. But Iran has almost one-fourth the population of the U.S. and is well on its way to developing nuclear weapons. The next day Mr. Obama had to reverse himself and declare he had "made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave."
Last week in Orlando, Fla., he said he would meet with Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez to discuss, among other issues, Chávez's support of the Marxist FARC guerrillas in Colombia. The next day, in Miami, he insisted any country supporting the FARC should suffer "regional isolation." Obama advisers were left explaining how this circle could be squared. In a debate last July, Mr. Obama pledged to meet, without precondition, the leaders of Iran, North Korea, Syria and Cuba. He called President Bush's refusal to meet with them "ridiculous" and a "disgrace."
Heavily criticized, Mr. Obama dug in rather than backtrack. He's claimed, in defense of his position, that John F. Kennedy's 1961 summit with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna was a crucial meeting that led to the end of the Cold War.
Not quite. Kennedy himself admitted he was unprepared for Khrushchev's bullying. "He beat the hell out of me," Kennedy confided to advisers. The Soviet leader reported to his Politburo that the American president was weak. Two months later, the Berlin Wall was erected and stood for 28 years.
Reporters may now give Mr. Obama's many gaffes more notice. But don't count on them correcting an implicit bias in writing about such faux pas.
Over the years, reporters have tagged a long list of conservative public figures, from Barry Goldwater to Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush, as dim and uninformed. The reputation of some of these men has improved over time. But can anyone name a leading liberal figure who has developed a similar media reputation, even though the likes of Al Gore, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have committed substantial gaffes at times? No reporter I've talked to has come up with a solid example.
It's clear some gaffes are considered more newsworthy than others. But it would behoove the media to check their premises when deciding just how much attention to pay to them. The best guideline might be: Show some restraint and judgment, but report them all.

Great editorial. It serves Democrats right, in this case Hillary, to get a taste of their own medicine when it comes to the liberal media.
Not that I'm defending Hill, but the media has been hugely unfair to her in comparison to their Obamafest.
We are living in a prolonged Obamapalooza and I just don't know if I can take 4 years of love fest for Obama after 8 of BDS.

The difference between Hilary's Bosnia story and Obama's Auschwitz story is that the former was a complete work of fiction whereas the latter had partial truth to it. I doubt Obama was trying to slip one by the media there, as he himself later reconciled the comment.
Clinton, on the other hand, was lying out of her ass.

what does the burden of proof in a criminal matter have to do with it? Something is the truth or it is not. There is not half truth. It's like saying he's half dead.

It's either true or it is not. Okay, I'll bite. The truth is Barack Obama had an uncle who helped liberate a concentration camp. He did, however, not tell the truth when he said his Uncle liberated Auschwitz – but the difference between a lie and a blunder is intent (intent is paramount in jurisprudence, no?).
So, we have a simple dichotomy:
1. Obama slipped up and said this concentration camp was Auschwitz, when it was in fact Buchenwald.
2. Or, if you're especially cynical, he attempted to pull one over the American people, the media, and the fact checkers at wikipedia.
Within this dichotomy we can only speculate whether it was intentional or a mistake. Being a potential Obama supporter, I'll choose #1. You might choose #2, but neither of these options may be patently true. It may be a false dichotomy for all we know!
Now, back to the original point: the article attempted to defend Hilary's words while lambasting Barack. As I've already said, Hilary saying she came under direct fire wasn't some blunder or gaffe, it was a contrived lie. It wasn't a matter of her getting caught up in the most heated democratic primary this country has ever seen, forgetting a fact, and then trying to improvise. It was a flat out LIE.
Obama, on the other hand, got the name of the concentration camp wrong. If you can't see the difference between lying about being under gun fire and committing a factual blunder, I don't know what to tell you.
The man is human, he'll say stupid things like "10,000 people died" or there is "57" states. Even the greatest speakers in the world, when uttering thousands upon thousands of words, are prone to slip-ups. It's not evil elitism or ignorant politics, its probability. You yourself, entering dozens upon dozens of blog entries a month, probably make some errors – both factual and grammatical.
You're human, so our are politicians. I realize we hold them to a higher standard, but believe me, you could not even come close to doing what any of these guys do on a daily basis (nor could I). It comes with life practice. I understand having grievances with Obama, but these particular arguments are insulting to both of our intelligences.

Mike the examples you point out were blunders or him hyping himself. Whatever it was, he gets a pass from the liberal media. Had McCain said those things, they'd be ripping him a new asshold and calling him senile.
Obama is a legend in his own mind and wants everybody to know that. He's a lightweight and the perfect candidate for the democratic party.
If the Dems were smart, they'd pick Hillary who would present a stronger challenge to McCain.
What can you say for a party that chooses the likes of Kerry, Dukakis, Mondale, etc.

As I remember, the media had a field day when McCain blew the Shia v. Sunni issue in Iraq. In fact, it was 'front page' on Yahoo news. The liberals control the media and are doing an excellent job of guiding the ignrant and uninformed. Mike: would you cut President Bush the same slack? I seriously doubt it, so I smell the ever present hypocrisy and double standards that usually guide ideologues, mostly on the left.

Cigar Mike,
If the Democrats were smart they would not given control of the party to the likes of Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosy and Harry Reid.
The Democratic Party leadership has been hijacked by a group of extreme left wing idiots that are dooming the party.
Look at all the noise they made before they got control of congress in 2006; tell me what they have accomplished for the American people since they took control? Nada.

FreedomForCuba, the only formula that worked for the dems was what clinton did; moving to the center and by signing off on GOP legislation and taking credit for it. SO they reject what works and opt instead for the Kerry/Dukakis/Mondale formula to which they can add Mr. Obama.

Cigar Mike,
You are very right about the only formula that worked for the Democrats was Clinton’s and that’s why I feel that the Republicans will retain the White House in November.
Many moderate Democrats will vote for McCain if Hillary is not nominated because they’re turned-off by Obama’s inexperience, choice of friends, policies, etc.
Remember that these moderate Democrats can identify more closely to John McCain than to Barack Hussein Obama.

CM/FFC: I hope you guys are right, but I feel this surge of "euphoria" over the young, charismatic minority, panhandling the always uplifting mantra of "change." I remember people saying the same thing about Clinton - we need "change", never mind that Bush, Sr. was a moderate who seemed to be doing quite well, until the economy performed its traditional, cyclical flop. The MSM has done a wonderful job of building the propaganda against the War, and now the economy, making it seem the world is falling apart even with an unemployment rate of 5%! And now they, and the "easily swayed" minions are fawning over the "change" messiah. I'm seeing scary trends, and I fear the worst. My only hope is that the famous "silent majority" will wake up on election day and see what the Democrats, and especially Obama, are truly all about.

Mambi, Obama can't hold Bill Clinton's jockstrap. Bill is a master politician. One of the best. Secondly, Bill won primarily because of Ross Perot taking a lot of votes from Bush 41. There is no 3rd party candidate this year strong enough to be a spoiler like Perot or like Nadar in 2000.
In 1992:
Bubba -- 43.0%
Bush 41 -- 37.4%
Perot -- 18.9%
that 18.9 percent would have more likely gone for Bush 41. It would have made a big difference.

CM: Thanks for reminding me, I'd forgotten about that little piece of sh.. Our world might be little different today, if it hadn't been for him. BTW, I also sense among some conservatives that same self-destructive desire to jump ship and go to some 3rd party nut-case. They dislike McCain so much, that they'd cut their nose off to spite their face. Lets hope they don't make it that easy for Obama. They need to vote, and they need to vote for McCain - they can hold their nose while they do it, but it'll be worth it in the end. I'd hate to think my parents rescued me from Cuba's leftist nightmare 46 years ago, only to end up in the American version of the broke-dick political philosophy.

I doubt conservatives will jump to Bob Barr the libertarian party candidate. He just came out in favor of gay marriage today.
It's Obama, McCain, and the nutjobs. that's all who will be on the ballot.

Mambi,
I also think that this election might turn to be a nail biter (you never know) because I agree with you that the MSM is going to great lengths to put Obama on a pedestal that he does not belong.
On the other hand I fully agree with Cigar Mike that Barack Hussein Obama is a much cheaper and inexperienced version of the master bullshitter himself, William Jefferson Clinton, and that will be his undoing at the end.
Bill Clinton was a much smoother bullshitter. Obama flip-flops and contradicts himself way too much in his comments, views, positions and actions to go unnoticed by the voters.
Many of these voters will be far more wary of Obama being in charge of the Presidency of the United States of America that of McCain regardless what the MSM says.
This fact will turn enough Democratic centrist and moderates votes over McCain because they will rightly fear that Obama is not qualified for the high office he seeks.
And sooner of later the still disgruntled with McCain Republicans will come to realize that the consequences of their actions will be way too much greater for America to bear if they don’t make their vote count against Obama on election day.
You can say anything you want about John McCain and disagree with him on many issues but, we all know that if in these difficult times that we are living the shit somehow hits the fan and the national security of the United States of America is at stake; John McCain will fight for his country.
I cannot say the same for Barack Hussein Obama.
Would not surprise me at all if he would be facing such a difficult scenario he would find a way to surrender America or drop the ball big time with untold consequences for the nation and the rest of the world.
That’s why Barack Hussein Obama cannot be President of this great country. Too much is at stake in these difficult times to have such an anti-American, lightweight, inexperienced bullshit artist in charge.
Anyway, just remember to always keep “el basito” and candles handy because we might need all the help we can get on November 7.
LOL
