Elián blurb in People Magazine
I know, it's People, what can we expect, but it angers me none the less, as this is the one just about EVERYONE will read and accept without giving it a second thought.
In this weeks edition of People, in the Passages section, next to the photo that's currently going around of the happy Young Communist, is this "Update":
"Affirming his loyalty to fidel castro, Elián González, 14, joined Cuba´s Young Communist Union June 14. González was the focus of a politically charged custody battle after he was found clinging to an inner tube off the Florida coast in 1999. Seven months later he returned to Cuba."
They make it sound as though Elián exercised his free will and joined the Union out of loyalty to the murderous tyrant.
No mention of how he remembers looking down the barrel of an Uzi and being forcibly taken from his family.
I hope they get many many letters.

The Saga Continues...

Ziva,
You know what really angers me about the Elian saga? ... the fact that not once has there ever been any reference that his mother sacrificed her life to bring him to freedom ... her death in the entire ordeal remains ignored ... how about for a change to write something about her heroic act? ... Sadly, her life was sacrificed in vain ... where are the femminists or those advocates for women rights in this picture? Ups! ... I forgot ... it does not go along with their agenda ... HASTA CUANDO!!!
I wish you well :) Melek

Exactly Aymee! Imangine her last moments, perhaps hopeful that her son would somehow safely arrive to freedom's shore, and would have the life she envisioned for him. Instead he's kidnapped by armed thugs and sent back. All these stories this past week have really bothered me, but this one pushed me over the edge. Just an afterthought on one of People's back pages.
