Today's WTF moment

The headline:

"Cuban church protests support for gay rights"

The gist of the story:

Cuba's Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday protested the communist government's growing support of gay rights, including a daylong event raising awareness against homophobia and a law allowing sex-change operations.

So, the Cuban Catholic Church protests the castro regime's "support" of gay rights but doesnt protest the castro regime's continued and systematic violations of human rights?

Amazing. It's actions like these that make me glad I dont go to church all that often.

Val,

With all the absurdities I have read about the church in Cuba lately ... they seem to be so in line with the government ... I wonder if they are somehow doing the regime's "dirty work" ... after all, their record on human rights and treatment of gays in the island has been atrocious (the social isolation of those who are HIV positive or have AIDS), to say the least ... and now that they are pretending to ease up on gays due to pressure ... there's the timely oppositon from the "church" ... "soborno" ... lo mas seguro!!! ... and as we would say ... regarding the church in Cuba ... "esto le puso la tapa al pomo"!!!

CAMBIO - I wish you well :) Melek

You're glad not to go to Church? WE are glad not to have you near! ;) The policy against Gay Marriage is not "Cuba's church" thingy, it's way what the Church is been saying anytime, since this Zapatero creep came up with the brilliant idea.

Some may stay politically correct and say "uuh, let's marry them, it's so modern" but most people that, unlike you, have values, and care to lift from bed on Sunday Morning, have a very clear picture of what defines marriage. I see you do not. And it's a pity. But after what you did to Killcastro and his family. Well... there ain't much to wait from you.

One last piece of advice: stay out of Church. They are waiting for you, down, there.

This is the same church whose pontiff toured the island 10 years ago, and uttered not a single strong word against the regime, when he was purportedly the only figure whose authority to speak for the oppressed was unquestioned.

Manrique, you are throwing stones, stones of intolerance. Do you relly think the illegitemate Cuban government which has systematically violated every human right that each Cuban was born with really cares one way or other what the church thinks? I am not defending the Cuban Catholic church, their records is shameful.

In Arizona you have a Constitution and a Bill of Rights protecting you and your narrow world view, lucky you. Shame on you Manrique Zabala.

Manrique, you seem to pretty judgmental for someone that wraps himself up in the faith. There's a name for folks like you: Pharisees.

Manrique,

You're glad not to go to Church? WE are glad not to have you near!

Spoken like a true Christian.

Since apparently you have reading comprehension problems, please show me where it is that I criticized the church SOLEY AND ONLY for their protest against support for the homosexual community. I wont even get into the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church vis a vis homosexuality.

I criticized the church for their inaction and self-censorship regarding the abuses to human rights in Cuba. Mum's the word on that, but have a little gay pride parade and teh cuban catholic Church is all over it.

Absurd, hypocritical, ridiculous and UNCHRISTIAN.

Id also appreciate it if you refrain from speading rumor and innuendo, bordering on libel, on this blog or you will be banned. if you believe Killcastro or his family were hurt on account of any action I took, then I got a couple of bridges here in Miami for sale, dirt cheap.

Comemierda.

Personally, as the [probably] only gay person to read and comment on Babalu, I find this whole story sordid and shameful. I've heard reports from Cuba that the Catholic Church there has done a lot for homosexuals, especially during the UMAP period and even up until now. When I went with my mom to accompany her on her visit to her last remaining sister, I actually met some gay people in La Habana and most were not at all antagonistic to the Church (the government was another story). My cousin in Cuba, Mirta, who is a VERY devout Catholic is extremely open about gay people and accepted me immediately without recriminations of any kind!

All in all, the Church has MUCH bigger and more important issues with the Cuban government than this squabble over the gay thing. I don't necessarily support gay "marriage", but I don't think the state should be in the sacrament business anyway. After all, the state doesn't record your baptism, first communion, confirmation, etc. The state should simply recognize "civil unions" between 2 people. If you want "marriage", that is a sacrament and you should go to a church for that.

It is almost embarrassing for me as a devout Catholic (yes, I deal with those contradictions, but that is another story for another day) to defend the Church in Cuba. Honestly, their silence is shameful. My Pastor happens to be Padre Alberto from Radio Paz, and I know how he aches over the Cuban Church's silence, but he is not always allowed to speak his mind. The Church is what it is - certainly NOT a democracy. But to choose this issue to openly protest over sickens me, not only as a gay man, but as a cuban who knows the bigger wrongs of the cuban dictatorship.

God forgive them, for they know not what they do...

Those aren't Catholics protesting the openings for gays. Most of the island's Catholic church hierarchy have effectively excommunicated themselves by working with and/or supporting the dictatorship. They are, in a word . . . Godless.

The second half of your sentence is correct.

Cangrejero,

Thank you for that lucid, candid and spot on comment.
