Few Cuban citizens have phones and computers

What? But how can this be? Didn't the great and munificent crown prince decree cell phones and computers to all of his loyal subjects?

HAVANA (Reuters) - Forget iPods, BlackBerries and other electronic gadgets, most Cubans are still waiting for telephones and less than five percent have a computer, the government reported on Thursday.

There definitely must be something wrong with this Reuters article because these are the reforms that signaled a monumental shift in government policy on the island. How can it be that after hearing all the wonderful stories about how prince raul's decrees would make the lives of the average Cuban much better, they are still pretty much in the same place they were a few months ago?

This would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Coconut Juic, aka Alex,

Dude, you got some gall, man. Wasnt it you I heard on a radio show threatening to cut my balls off and shove them down my throat? Well, theyre still there, as attached as ever. And now you come back into babalu to make ridiculously childish remarks?

I thought about deleting your comment, but decided to let it stand to show your pettiness.

They always come back, Val, they can't resist the allure of the Babalublog.

What's the point of getting a computer when the gov't is only going to limit your access on which websites you can go to?

Things are a lot, lot worse than they were a few months ago. Repression for once thing, has gotten worse.

I also believe that things within the Cuban government are not as rosy as they would make us believe. Why else would the munificent prince dust off and press iron fifo this past week?

It's Bush's fault, of course. Don't you remember all of those computers the Pastors for Peace collected and had to leave at the border?

From Renaissance and Decay, and World Bank Development Indicators online, one can pluck this little chestnut. In the 1950s, Cuba was fifth in the world in TVs per capita. In 2005, Cuba was last in Latin America ( even behind Haiti) , and 171st out of 210 countries worldwide in Internet access per capita. THAT is socialist progress.

Since in 1960, Cuba was 8 years ahead of Latin America in life expectancy, and in 2005 was 5 years ahead of Latin America, that doesn't exactly point to the Superiority of Socialism.
