I don't think that being an animal rights activist makes one a "liberal." All due respect, everything isn't black and white. There are shades in between. I'm a perfect example, I'm an animal rights activist who has been to anti-fur protests, who doesn't eat meat, who wants to save the seals, whales, endangered species, and the environment [Yes, I'm an environmentalist], etc...but I have also been active in anti-Castroism for as far back as I can remember and have fought on many forums for the freedom of Cuba. Being an animal rights activist doesn't make one an Obama supporting, Castro loving, Che T-shirt wearing, anti-establishment "liberal," no more than being a Republican "conservative" makes one an ally of Cuban Americans and an advocate for a free Cuba. The "lift-the-embargo" and trade with the Castro, Inc.. Republicans from the grain states are a perfect example, as are people like Congressman Tancredo who hates Cuban Americans.

I am a member of PETA and many of the people in PETA come from a cross section of life. Many genuinely care for animals and that's why they are animals rights activists not because they are these absolutist liberals who have a 100% liberal agenda.

Fact is that Castro has been so all around pernicious and destructive to Cuba that he has also harmed Cuba's flora and fauna [i.e. Cuba's barrier reef is being destroyed, dolphins in Cuban waters are being captured and sold, the Cuban bay has become toxic, top soil eroded, strip mining permitted, there are no animal welfare societies to take care of homeless dogs and cats] and these are issues that we should also be concerned with.

Ray, I love animals, too, but personally, I stop short of putting animals above the wellbeing of humans. I admire your devotion to animals and your candor, but I find Peta way too extreme.

I have a dog which I love very much, to the point where I look at her like a child... but I think PETA is just taking things to far. They can't honestly expect everyone to give up meat, and how does the consumption of meat have ANYTHING to do with global warming? I think those scientist sound crazier than PETA

Ray,
I do agree with you on just about all you said.
The humane treatment of animals and treating our planet well is important. You are also correct about many of the midwest Republicans.
Unfortunately, Peta is full of wackos and the environmentalist movement is full much of the same.
