La nueva reforma agraria?

Reinier does a much better job, expressing my befuddlement at the recent announcement that government lands in Cuba are going to be turned over to farmers to work, than I could.

Does the word "SHARECROPPING" mean anything to you?
Only difference is that the landlord is "El Pueblo."

Here's what I think, the bottom line is this: castro inc is doing what they have always done, guarding their bank accounts, and putting themselves in the position to bail out if they lose power.

Dr. Shalit, you hit the nail on the head. That's precisely what it is: SHARECROPPING. As Reinaldo Arenas wrote in his biography, "Before Night Falls," the state has become the all-powerful LATIFUNDIO. Its horrible how the media just repeats Castro, Inc's.. lies without any cross-examination, or historical perspective whatsoever. Talk about dropping the ball!

By the way, another thing that the media doesn't mention is that these formerly fertile plots of land are unredeemable, because--thanks to the goverment's negligence-- they have been overtaken by Marabu. This plant which is a tangle of wood with spines is so hard to remove that even mechanical equipment breaks down when trying to clear it. Of course, Raul's idea is that if he gives some poor devil ten years to redeem the land, once is is redeemed [if it is possible], it will be taken over by the government once it is profitable again.

A real reform would be if a constitutional change were made and the land were given for keeps to the farmer. But of course, this is not what has happened, nor will it ever happen under Castro, Inc.. so this is not a reform. It's nothing more than a variation on the same theme that has been going on for the last 50 years. The Imperial brothers emit one of their arbitrary laws [that can be rebuked the following week] and that's it.
