Orbit the dog needs friends
Some of you may already know this but I'm actively involved with greyhound adoption. Though I'm not a professional by any stretch, I designed the web site for our local greyhound adoption group called "Friends of Greyhounds."
Greyhounds are really gentle and sweet pets. I should know, I've had two. The thing is that you have to adopt them as adults. On the bright side adult dogs need a lot less training. For example these ex-racers are all crate trained. That means they don't go to the bathroom in the kennels where they sleep. It's an easy step to get a greyhound to understand that your house is one big kennel.
Anyway, one of the big problems we've encountered at Friends of Greyhound is that people don't like to adopt black greyhounds (greyhounds come in many different color and marking combinations, none of which is gray). My two greyhounds have been black and white. But the all black greyhounds seem to get short shrift for really no reason at all. Perhaps it's that their coats don't look as shiny in the adoption kennel (kind of like a black car on which the dust is much more obvious). But once in an adopter's home black greys really shine. It's a combination of better food quality and less dust (the dogs in the adoption kennel are "let out" several times a day on a sandy surface to play and do their necessities).
One of the black greys that's been at Friends of Greyhounds for a long time is sweet one nicknamed Orbit.

To get the word out about Orbit Friends of Greyhounds has created a Myspace page for him. We'd like to get as many people as possible to become Orbit's myspace friend. So register for MySpace if you haven't already, click on Orbit's MySpace page and become his friend. Then email your friends and have them do the same.

Henry, as a fellow greyhound adoptive parent, I can attest to the fact that these dogs are the greatest pets anyone could have. They're gentle, affectionate, and for their large size, quite unobtrusive.
We have had our greyhound for 7 years and in September he will turn 13. But he can still run circles around our two Australian Shepards.
If anyone out there is considering a pet, a retired greyhound is an excellent choice!

We had to put our Terrier Mix mutt to sleep after 16 years. This happen last Feb. and we are still in mourning.
Thanks for the info on Grayhounds. We plan on getting a rescue pet after the first of the year and will keep this post in mind.

Henry, if we didn't have a houseful of animals already, I would come down and snatch him up.
So Alberto - you have Aussies, huh? I love them - I've had three. Only one is still with us. And I will second your statement that greyhounds are great dogs.
