A little shakin' goin' on in LA

Thank you everyone who has emailed enquiring of our safety. I'm happy to report that we left coast Babalusians and our families are fine.

My office evacuated for a short while as a precaution. So far I haven't heard any reports of damage.

Like many Californians, we play the "How strong was it?" game. My co-workers and I accurately guessed between a 4.5-5.5 on the Richter Scale. Caltech measured 5.4.

Just another day in la la land.

I prefer intransigent cuban-americans and hurricanes to earthquakes.

Glad to know you are o.k. Ziva. Our building did a little "Danzon", enough to get us to hurry out but then everyone just went back to work.

5.4 isn't too bad. I remember the Whittier Narrows quake of 87. I lived in La Habra, and that felt like a strong jolt. And who can forget Northridge?!?! Fortunately, I'm in Central Cali now where it isn't too bad. I didn't feel this one, though.

Henry, "Danzon" to describe a quake. Perfect.

J2, I remember the Whittier Quake as well. We were in Burbank, and it was a very strong jolt. Todays' felt much less.

Ziva,

Next time your office should have a pool on earthquake magnitude; it would make it more fun out of a bad situation.

Called a relative in the LA area that arrived from Cuba few months ago and she already wants to move to Miami ASAP. She shitted bricks today.

I went through one back in 1986 in Westchester County, NY that lasted about 10 seconds. It was about 6.9 or less on the Richter scale (don't remember exactly) but it was very interesting experience.

I rather take hurricanes over earthquakes, at least with hurricanes you can prepare for it.

Amen. Give me a cat 4 any day of the week over a quake.

Freedom, I've never heard of an earthquake that big in New York. I've always thought the biggest ones in the East have been the New Madrid quakes of 1812. Correct me if I'm worng.

j2tharome,

As I wrote it could have been less, it has been 22 years since it happened (and I don’t remember the exact numbers) thought I remember that felt very strong, but it lasted for only 10 seconds.

It happened around 5:55-6:00 AM, I was sleeping and it woke me up immediately. The moment I woke-up I knew it as an earthquake, even thought I never had experienced one.

The earthquake had originated in the Ramapo Faults area of Westchester County, NY.

Next I heard the next-door Mexican neighbors opening up the door and talking about earthquake, of course since they have experienced them frequently in their country.

The next day we got an aftershock around the same time early in the morning but it only lasted 1-2 seconds. Believe it or not, that one woke me up too.
