The easiest way to really lose the conservative base
I have to hand it to John McCain. He definitely fits the "maverick" label they've all given him.
Here's my take: any Republican presidential candidate who wants conservatives to vote for him -- real Ronald Reagan conservatives -- will not get those votes by chumming around with RINO Lindsay Graham and by floating a Joe Lieberman balloon with the RNC. It just ain't gonna cut it, John.
Deep in my heart I know he could care less about our votes despite his rhetoric. His VP decision may be calculated to sway some in the middle; but in the end it would be the ultimate slap in the face to all of us who hold conservative principles and values. Considering the alternative -- an inexperienced, racist, socialist sock puppet -- the "I'm not insane" vote will probably go with McCain.
I just don't know how dirty I'll feel pressing that button on November 4.

he's throwing a bunch of names out there. He can't pick Joe L. since Joe is not GOP. Lindsay will be AG under McCain so he's not serious contender.
I hope it's a solid conservative otherwise I can kiss my money goodbye under an Obama administration so the lefties can use it to line their pockets.

i won't feel dirty at all voting for McCain. Choosing that alternative, or choosing to let others select the alternative (by NOT voting, or voting for a 3rd party that has no chance of winning) would make me feel dirty.

First of all you wont be pressing a button - you will be bubbling in. Second of all - take it from someone who has voted third party in the past as a protest/principal vote - McCain is by far the best of a bad lot. Even Lieberman is more consevative than Obama and I think his ACU rating is abysmal.

This is what bothers me about moderate middle mindset, I'm forced to get dirty from their muddy mess made.
Though Leftists my nemesis at least they are clear about what they stand for; the moderate 'independent' on the other hand is stuck in the mud waiting to see which rope to pull them out of the mess is more popular.

That's what McCain is counting on, too. He's thinking Obama is the best thing going for him as far as keeping the base in line so he can concentrate on courting the middle or worse.

George, I think Thomas Sowell said it best in 1992: better a third-rate fireman than a first-rate arsonist.

I am a "moderate" that voted for Bill Clinton twice, then for George W. Bush twice. If McCain selected a right-wing "crazy" like Huckabee (the idiot doesn't believe in evolution for God's sake!), then I would vote Libertarian. If McCain selects a sensible moderate (anyone but a fundamentalist Christian), then I will vote for him. I will NOT vote for Obama.
So those of you concerned about losing the conservative base, you shoul be more worried about losing the moderate middle!

I think the purpose of the trial balloons is to influence expectations. Without them, social conservatives would be upset with a Romney VP nomination. Now that they have been scared by the prospect of a pro-choice VP nominee, they will more easily accept Romney.

I loved the Thomas Sowell line. I love Thomas Sowell.
As for worrying about the moderates, it is far more important for McCain to court the conservatives who are the activists in getting out the vote. If McCain picks someone who is a weak choice for conservatives, he is upsetting a needed support group who already is skittish about him. If he chooses a moderate or a liberal and not a conservative, then it looks like he really doesn't want to win.
And I can do without the epithets like "right wing crazies". I am right wing, I am not crazy. And Huckabee would be a most unacceptable veep choice for me.
I still hope McCain picks the Governor of Alaska.

honey - can you do without epithets like left-wing loonies also? I'm sorry, the freaks live at both extremes.

What was it in my comments that would give anyone the impression that I would use "left wing loonies"?
I prefer discussions that confine themselves to facts and reason. I can do without all invectives in arguments. And anyone with intelligence knows that there are bad actors on both the right and the left. I would hope that on this blog comments come mostly from those who prefer reason.

Honey - my comments were not directed at you specifically, but just the general tone sometimes. Lots of epithets are used around here sometimes - I understand people get emotional about politics. But there should be general "boundaries" of both right and left wing "craziness".
For me, on the right it is christian fundamentallism and their desire to foist that on the entire population. They want to force your children to learn creationism in the schools, return to Prohibition if you give them half a chance, and warn you that dancing comes from the devil (imagine telling THAT to a cuban!).
On the left, it is the radical feminists that insist a baby isn't a human life until it pops out of the uterus. They cling to the mantra of "it's a woman's CHOICE", to the extreme of sticking with it right up until the moment of birth. All of us "non-crazies" listen to that and say "...what the ....?!"
Those are some of my definitions and I'm sticking with them! LOL
