America Is Listening

Great editorial today in the WSJ by Peggy Noonan on why McCain is doing as well as he is despite the odds. One of the things she mentions is quite interesting and if McCain would adopt such a pledge, he would be guaranteed a victory -- i.e., just like Teddy Roosevelt, make a one term pledge.

One wonders if any politician today would have the wherewithal to make such a pledge, but I'd sure love to see it.

In any event, enjoy your Friday. Happy hour at 5pm EDT so get your cigars ready. And if you see a liberal, make sure you blow cigar smoke in their face.

You know what's the only thing worse than a leftist liberal? I'm still trying to think of something. If you have an answer, post it.

UPDATE: I don't like Ms. Dowd's lefty politics, but her column on the One is pretty funny.

The only president to make a pledge to serve one term and not already be in office was James K. Polk. Teddy almost served the entirety of McKinley's second term.

Actually Teddy made the pledge that he would only run once for President and he did.

He went a little nuts later on and tried to run as a third party candidate when he was dissatisfied with how his protege, Howard Taft had been doing as president and he ran as a Bull Moose. A big mistake for Teddy, except it made him legend give that he got shot and it didn't even phase him.

I put a rather wordy qualifier in the front to exclude Teddy since he was already in office. As for the 1912 campaign - as a political junkie, it is a favorite. Two former friends tearing into each other. W.H. Taft despondent over the rantings of his mentor. A split convention, a third party run and some inspirational speeches and moments by TR. All that and we get stuck with probably one of the worst presidents in the history of our Republic.

"Now to you men, who, in your turn, have corne together to spend and be spent in the endless crusade against wrong, to you who face the future resolute and confident, to you who strive in a spirit of brotherhood for the betterment of our Nation, to you who gird yourselves for this great new fight in the never-ending warfare for the good of humankind, I say in closing what in that speech I said in closing: We stand at Armageddon, and we battle for the Lord."

The only thing worse than a leftist liberal is a wealthy leftist liberal in a position of power.

H.W. Brands who has some pretty good books to his credit has a new bio of FDR called "Traitor to His Class." TR and FDR were old money while they peole they fought were distinctly new money. That is elitism at it's most basic level.
