Is Protesting Unpatriotic?

I received an email from Bruce Weinstein, PhD, known as "The Ethics Guy" for CNN's American Morning show, He asked me to consider his latest article, "The Ethics of Protesting," which is currently in Business Week. It deals with whether there is a right and wrong way to protest, especially in light of the protests at the Democratic and Republican Conventions. Is protesting unpatriotic? Or is it possible to protest in a way that is respectful to the group against which you protest and your country? Or does protesting exclude respect?
You can read the article HERE
Come back and let us know what you think about protesting after you read it.

I thought nice guys finished last. Just kidding, but I assumed that everyone already knew these seven points had merit. Its a good codification of how to protest like civilized ladies and gentlemen.
Do you think the 'bad' sort of protesters are simply ignorant of these basic canons? I fear that many of them are just plain bad or otherwise inclined against civility.

Protesting has its benfits and I am not, nor will I ever, be ready to call it"unpatriotic". To stifle speech is to ignore the first ammendment and to take one's right for the the fear that it may change opinions, now that is unpatriotic not to mention despotic and cowerdice. Our friends in Castro's gulags can attest to that.

Although I generally agree with Weinstein's points there is one that I strongly disagree with: I don't believe anyone is under any obligation to spend money at the site of a protest, any more than we are under obligation to spend our hard-earned money anywhere. The power of our wallets is a very personal choice, and I think we should spend what we what where we want to, whether protesting or not. Those on tight budgets still have the right to protest what they consider unjust. Not everything comes down to money, Mr. Weinstein.
