Miami Dade College’s West Campus Presents the Work of Renowned Sculptor Tony Lopez

Happy 90th Birthday to the great Cuban Sculptor Tony Lopez who has been like a family member to me my entire life. If you're in the area of Doral, check out this exhibit. You may even recognize a bust of yours truly at age 7.
Miami, Friday, August 29, 2008 - Famous for sculpting the likeness of Pope John Paul II and Jose Marti, among other legendary figures, sculptor Tony Lopez will celebrate his 90th birthday with a retrospective art exhibition aptly titled Ninety Years of Tony Lopez at the West Gallery, located at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) West Campus. The gallery will host a special opening reception on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m.Lopez, born in Cuba, whose father and grandfather were both sculptors, was exposed to the arts early on and spent most of his free time molding clay. His own work later took the shape of prominent Cuban revolutionary leaders, as well as memorials, caricatures, statuettes, and abstract art. During the last forty years, since he established a studio in Miami, he has produced many notable works, such as the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach and the Torch of Freedom in Miami. His sculptures can also be seen around the world and include the Governor Boden Monument in Grand Cayman and a Jose Marti sculpture in New Orleans.
Ninety Years of Tony Lopez is a joint collaboration between the MDC Art Gallery System, the West Campus, and cities of Hialeah and Doral, as well as Gustavo Orta, art collector and curator of this exhibition. The artwork will remain on display through Sept. 19. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

I wish I could see the exhibit--the work looks wonderful. Since I live in Maryland and won't be able to see the exhibit, would there be anything like an exhibition catalog that I could purchase? Or any books about the artist? I'd like to know more about his work. Congratulations to Tony Lopez from a fellow artist.

Hola:
