Help for Hurricane Victims

Hurricane Gustav devastated Cuba, here is a list of organizations that are providing aid to Cuba:

MONETARY DONATIONS: JEWISH SOLIDARITY, a 501.C.3 not for profit organization with a license to secure donations for Cuba relief. You can send your donation check to: JEWISH SOLIDARITY, attention: Maricusa, 100 Beacon Boulevard, Miami, FL 33135. Check should be marked "humanitarian relief".

CATHOLIC CHARITIES/Caritas Cubanas, a not for profit agency of the Catholic Church who also holds a license to provide aid to Cuba. Checks should be made out to Catholic Relief Services and sent to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21203-7090. Checks should be marked: "For Cuba Gustav Relief".

Or you can click here to make a donation online, please specify "CRS Severe Weather Fund Cuba" in the space under "Do you have any additional requests for your contribution?" on the donation page.

ITEM DONATIONS: For those of you in the Miami area who would prefer to take food items in lieu of a check donation, you can do so by taking these to The Daughters of Charity at 500 NW 63 Avenue in Miami. They also have a license to send aid to Cuba and are sending two containers in the next few days. The organization has particularly identified the following high-need items: powdered milk, evaporated milk, canned little hot dogs, lentils in packages, black and red beans in packages.

If you want to make donations to CARITA or any other organizations be forewarned: It’s customary for the Cuban government to give our kind contributions to other countries affected by Hurricanes. During Katrina all contributions made to CARITAS and other non-profit organizations were diverted to Jamaica and Haiti “from the Cuban government.” This is how they work their propaganda machine. Several years ago donations of milk and other perishables made by the Spanish government were sold in the “tiendas para divisas” in DOLLARS. There are ample food reserves as well as ample supplies –such as building materials- that the Cuban government uses “for donations” whenever they want to export communism. Just ask anyone now living in exile that used to be part of that Machiavellian machinery.

I’m overwhelmed with grief just thinking about those poor people in Cuba, but believe me these contributions will never reach them. ONLY if the United Nations -for once- decide to apply pressure on Cuba (as they did in Meynar) to accept foreign aid from the U.S. and the E.U. Otherwise, those in need will NEVER see any of it.

I would add to the list rice, and baby compotas, as far as goods ,sheets and blankets are in high demand and soap.
1 quart of dawny dish soap makes many gallons of soap.

Unfortunately, when those CONTAINERS go into Cuba, they are seized by the government customs agents. Any non-governmental organization that insists on distributing the goods itself risks imprisonment. The only way to get aid directly to the people is to carry it in yourself and distribute it yourself.
