Who's really playing politics with Cuban tragedy?

From Friday's El Nuevo Herald (translation mine):

Cuba rejects direct aid from 25 European nations

HAVANA

Cuban officials told European representatives that the Havana government will not accept direct aid, for the victims of the hurricanes, from the Commission or 25 of the 27 EU countries, diplomatic sources reported yesterday.

Cuba has only accepted direct assistance from Spain and Belgium while the Commission and other EU countries (EU) who offered donations have yet to obtain a response, so some are planning to send them through UN agencies, the Red Cross and other intermediaries, the sources explained.

Officials from the Cuban Ministry for Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration told European representatives that the country maintains its policy of not accepting direct aid to nations that have not normalized cooperation agreements with the government of General Raúl Castro.

There you have it folks. Beggars can be choosers. In fact, beggars can demand. Of course those Cuban "officials" probably didn't have their roofs blown off and probably have plenty to eat and drink. It's time for the international community to denounce the true culprits and for the fifth column in this country to STFU.

Yes, but of course, the most influential newspaper in the United States, the New York Times, creates its own reality [which is always in sync with the official line out of Cuba] and according to them, it is the United States pressured by those horrible Cuban exiles who are waging a personal war against "Mr. Castro," who are responsible for aid not reaching the Cuban people.

The NYT's influence lies in that it [along with the Washington Post: the 2nd most influential paper] has a nationwide distribution and that many smaller newspapers pick up their stories.

The NYT has already editorialized that the USA/Cuban exiles are the guilty party in this tragedy. It has thus become the truth in the eyes of many Americans. The reality which you just published is not being picked up by the mainstream media other than a few so-called conservative outlets like the Wall Street Journal and El Nuevo Herald and they have limited, localized distribution.

Here is what the dastardly NYT is saying:

"The scale of devastation calls for an extraordinary assistance effort that is, so far, not happening. While the United States has offered some emergency aid to Haiti, it has not done enough for an impoverished nation that Americans have a moral responsibility to help. And the Bush administration’s peculiar fixation with an obsolete trade embargo and deep-pocketed anti-Castro hard-liners in Miami is standing in the way of dispatching desperately needed assistance for Cuba."
