Bust a Myth

Today someone told me that she was torn about the elections because Governor Palin allows wolf hunting for a bounty and makes hunters bring in a leg from the dead wolf. My first reaction was "B.S.!" But because the person who told me this shares my political beliefs, I decided that instead, I would try to find out if this were true. I won't even post the link to where she saw it so as not to give that site any more hits.

So, I spent a few hours looking into it and decided to post about it as well as some of the other rumors that are being spread- some with a tiny grain of truth blown out of proportion along with all kinds of embellishment. The list is endless- she wanted rape victims to pay for their own rape kits, she sanctions aerial wolf-hunting, she herself hunts wolves from airplanes, she convinced her daughter to get pregnant to make herself look older, she stated she wants to "pray away the gay," and so on.... Again, a kernel of truth buried deep inside the rumor, then twisted into a scandalous headline that hits blogs, Facebook, MySpace and emails.

So, I posted this on my site. I looked into these issues as best I could and I stand corrected if someone has a decent source that states otherwise. I will be happy to amend my post if I have erred. I also wrote to Governor Palin's office to ask for clarification on the "bounty" issue because from what I can find, a court denied it last year and there is no $150 reward for a wolf killed.

I immediately called BS on it because I can't imagine any woman being so cold-hearted and backwards to want this to happen. So I checked and checked again and this is what I found:

"...she didn’t try to charge rape victims personally for rape kits. This is one of those complicated ones with a tiny hint of truth behind it. First, the Chief of Police in Wasilla (not Palin) did apparently have a policy of asking a victim’s health insurance to pay for the rape kit as part of the ER visit. This, it turns out, is policy in a number of states, including Missouri and North Carolina. Second, the way this became an issue was after the then-governor of Alaska signed a bill forbidding it; this law was signed before Palin was Governor and no one tried to reverse it while she was Governor.
