Non Change You Can Count On
Back in July of 2006, when (f)idel bust a gut, and boy, does that seem like a long time ago, Cuba experts where quick to announce the era of (r)aúl the “pragmatic” proclaiming a smooth “transition” where “changes” would come fast and furious and the Cuban economy would be transformed by (r)aúl’s economic “reforms” and his “collegial” ruling style. These predictions were used as justifications for easing sanctions against the "new" regime.
Most Cuban exiles, on the other hand, warned that (r)aúl would be nothing more than a continuation of his older half brother's tyranny and that his regime would do nothing to improve the lives of the Cuban people because the goal of the regime has always been to oppress and to subjugate the Cuban people.
In past few weeks, after the hurricanes battered the island, we have unfortunately learned that the (c)astro regime has absolutely no plans to change course, make reforms or improve the everyday lives of the Cuban people. The regime’s refusal to accept the aid offered by the United States and the EU and the ideological cheerleading from el compañero (f)idel on his blog proves that as long as there’s a (c)astro in charge, there will be no changes in Cuba.
Another thing that hasn’t changed is the willingness of (c)astro sympathizers in the US to exploit any opportunity whatsoever to opportunistically plead the regime’s case, call for rewarding its inhumane behavior and attack the Cuban-American exile community.
