And Now A Little Cuban Culture
The 7th Annual Congress of the Cuban Cultural Center of New York will be held on Saturday, October 25, at the New York Film Academy. The subject is "The Cuban Cinema: from it's Origins to the Present." Information and schedule, mainly Spanish, here. Seems a bit pricey at a hundred plus. Of course, it is the whole day.
H/T Misceláneas de Cuba
In one of those slice of life stories, albeit it a truly depressing morsel, the October issue of Harper's features an article about the remains, literally, of the housing mess. Author Paul Reyes joins his Cuban father who makes his living cleaning out foreclosed properties in the Tampa area. I bring it to your attention because it is poignant, nicely written and reminds me of growing up in a small business. I couldn't find info on Reyes, other than that he once translated a Chavez screed for Harper's. If anybody has any info, I would appreciate. The article is not available on the internet. Given the truly nasty anti-McCain articles they've published lately, there's always the library.
Finally, don't forget to go see An American Carol, playing at local theaters. Cuba appears tangentially as the Michael Moore inspired character makes a trip there. Sound familiar? It's on my list.
And now for a little cafecito. Who needs sleep, anyway?
