Race to democratic socialism

I disagree with about 95% of this oped, and I loathe the fact that the author put Marx and Marti in the same sentence, but the second-to-last sentence poses a very interesting question:

"Which country, Cuba or the United States, will make the transition to democratic socialism first?"

Predictions?

Monica -

In the US, we have been a "Social Democracy Lite" since March, 1933 - for better or worse. What we USED to argue about were issues of distribution at the margin, Democracy being a GIVEN. Cuba's 1959 Revolution was stolen from the Cuban People, within a year, Totalitarianism replaced Authoritarianism and has been the GIVEN of the Cuban State, if not its people. The real question is WHEN - not IF - Cuba returns to Democracy. Nearly 50 years and still waiting. -S-
