WaPo: Mel Martinez to retire
The Washington Post's politics blogger is reporting that Mel Martinez will retire at the end of his term in 2010. This leaves a vacancy to be filled. You probably already know who I'd like to see in that seat.

Definitely Henry,
Marco Rubio would be the perfect fit to replace the Senator.
Not only that, Marco Rubio would bring more energy to the position with more articulate, common sense, down to earth, passionate tone to counter the liberal's agenda.
I can't wait until Marco decides to run.

watch for a bigger name to go in. Republicans are scared so they may beg Jeb to go for a run. They're going to want to run someone with state name recognition. Alex Sink may reconsider now that Martinez isn't running and she is a fomidable opponent. A moderate Democrat who appears to be a fiscal conservative. God help us if McCollum tries again. That being said Marco is awesome and failing everything else he should give it a shot. Obama showed that someone can make the leap from state legislature to the Senate

Obama's senate opponent bowed out because of scandal if I'm not mistaken.

I don't know if Marco can get a consensus in the I-4 and Panhandle among the GOP faithful. Mel was from Orlando, so he was well known in the I-4 area.
I think Jeb would be a show in. Just don't know if he wants to get back into politics. Despite his brother, Jeb was well liked here.

HLG - Obama's Republican opponent dropped out but he was behind anyway. Bringing in Keyes just made things worse. Marco has the goods but I just don't know if he can do it yet.
Cigar Mike - totally agree on your analysis. Marco needs name rec in the panhandle. It's all on Jeb if he wants to run. I can understand him wanting to stay out and replenishing the coffers. Those 8 years took a financial and personal toll - we are all better for it but I wouldn't blame him from passing.
