“Dictators” to the Right of me, “Presidents” to the Left

Henry's superb labor got me to thinking, so I looked up how these same papers treated Pinochet:

From the Washington Post 12/10/06 : “Gen. Augusto Pinochet, 91, the former Chilean dictator whose government murdered and tortured thousands during his repressive 17-year rule, died yesterday.

From the New York Times 12/11/06: “Augusto Pinochet, Dictator Who Ruled by Terror in Chile, Dies at 91 Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, the brutal dictator who repressed and reshaped Chile for nearly two decades and became a notorious symbol of human rights abuse and corruption, died yesterday at the Military Hospital of Santiago.

These come FROM THE VERY TITLES and the OPENING SENTENCES of the stories!

And some claim the MSM is biased.

Excellent post, the hypocrisy and extreme bias is maddening and infuriating. The truth is that Pinochet killed less, fixed his country, laying the foundations that today make it the model for Latin America. Not to mention that he voluntarily returned it to democracy after 17 years in power, even though he could have forcibly remained in charge. The comparisons are so stark that it boggles the mind. Absolutely f...ing incredible - the MSM and their fellow travellers make me sick.

It is correctly said that "the power of the pen is mightier than the sword." I am convinced that if the press had treated fidel like they treated Pinochet and Apartheid South Africa, [that is to say, they had not shilled for him] he would not be in power today. He owes his longevity in part to the preferential treatment he has received these past 50 years.

Rayarena; excellent observation. There's a book out called "The Man Who Invented Fidel", that details how the NY Times enhanced Fidel's image, thus facilitating his seizure. The SOB NYT reporter who did so, Herbert Mathews, never regretted covering up the truth and painting Fidel as some sort of savior for Cuba and Latin America. Unfortunately, we have them not only in the media, but also in the government bureaucracy. The MSM is dishonest and manipulative, just look at what they've done to the US political scene with their wholly biased reporting. Unfortunately, they're not held accountable for their actions.

Of course! Castro's reason for existing all these years is, "I'll save you from the Yanquis!" but in fact he never would have survived without the yanquis (the press, the academics, the religious left, etc.) Chavez' mantra is exactly the same.
