yay... (snore)

The annual reenactment of Fidel's caravan of jeeps and trucks rolling into Havana as they did 50 years ago did not seem to elicit much attention in the Cuban capitol yesterday. Even with Fidelito playing the part of his murderous father, the crowds just weren't there.

HAVANA (AP) — A caravan of jeeps and trucks rolled into Cuba's capital Thursday, cheered only by a smattering of school children — a subdued tribute to the 50th anniversary of the original wild street party that greeted Fidel Castro and his bearded rebels.

It seems the only ones excited about the revolution's anniversary are those who have not had to suffer its ravages. For Cuban dissident Miriam Leiva, however, the reasons to not want to celebrate are obvious.

"Repression will not cease," she [Leiva] wrote, "nor will there be liberation for the prisoners or conscience or peaceful political activists, or respect for human rights."

As an interesting side note, the writer of this AP article, although he made sure to quote the prerequisite number of Cuban communists extolling the wondrous achievements of the totalitarian dictatorship, actually ended his report with Ms. Leiva's quote.
