Anita Drink

Every time I read one of Anita Snow's reports from Havana, I feel like Anita Drink (get it? "I-need-a drink?). The AP's intrepid reporter who is embedded amongst the forces of the Cuban communist revolution earns every dollar she is paid, which she quickly converts to CUCs. With her CUCs in hand, Ms. Snow can then buy the consumer goods that are reserved only for the elite members of the regime, tourists, and the willing accomplices from the media, such as her, sold in stores that typical Cubans are not allowed to enter, let alone shop in. But such are the perils of the courageous reporters who brave the misery and the destitute existence of the Cuban people surrounding them while they wait patiently, ensconced in their air-conditioned apartments in Havana, for the government provided guide to pick them up and safely escort them to the next meeting with the generals so that they can be issued their new orders.

In her latest report from the battlefield of ideas, Ms. Snow informs us that a teleconference has taken place in which none other than experts in the realm of Cuba politics have expressed their expert opinion that in order to solve the US/Cuba diplomatic row is for the the US to capitulate to each and every demand of the Cuban dictatorship. This teleconference was arranged by the Center for Democracy in the Americas, a hotbed of intellectual thought and groundbreaking analysis of Cuba/US political issues, such as the brilliant and irrefutable argument to end the US embargo against Cuba because "[i]mportant people oppose the policy and want to see it changed."

Ms. Snow assures us that the Center for Democracy in the Americas is an "independent" organization of Cuba experts, and to a certain degree, I would agree with her; they are independent of logic and honesty. As I start my morning with a cafecito and read Ms. Snow's report, I can't help but to crave for a shot of something alcoholic to spice it up.

Anita needs more than a drink. She needs something that is akin to the nickname for Richard.

CDA is an out and out lefty/socialist outfit - to call it independent is irresponsible.
