Hey Now, He's a Rock Star?
After watching the past three days of pre-inaugural coverage, today I couldn't bring myself to watch Obama get sworn in. I was full. I watched all the interviews with the men and women on the street, listened to how historic an occasion this was, and caught all the sound bites. But when the time came to watch it over lunch today, I was Obama'ed out. Jaded already. So I skipped it. "Don't you want to be a part of history?" I was asked. As if me not watching it would exclude me from the history of being alive during this Inauguration.
To be fair, I never really watched the past inaugurations, either, except for President Reagan's. But after a local special on all things Obama last night here in Philly- the Obama Super Store in DC, the bobbleheads, the flags, the shirts, the mugs, the plates, the candles, the soaps, the plush dolls, the sneakers, the interviews... I just simply had my fill.
It's not that I want Obama to fail. I am not narrow-minded enough to wish that for our country. I just was hoping that he would have proven himself in some way before he was elevated to rock star status. We are not that shallow a country that we have shot him into the stratosphere of celebrity simply because of the color of his skin, are we? Should we not wait and see what this man does for the United States before all this added pressure is heaped on him? Entering his term and all the issues that come with it, it truly seems as if the weight of the world has been placed squarely on his shoulders. I,for one, cannot imagine why he, or anyone else, would want this job, but I surely do hope he does a fantastic job for all Americans, regardless of race, or religion or political affiliation.
If he manages to bridge the divide that we have experienced in the past 8 years, then that will be a surprise for those of us who have our doubts. It will be a pleasant surprise, of course, but for now, how about we start treating him like a man who has a monumentally important and difficult job to do, not a magical wizard who we wear emblazoned on our shirts because he can wave a magic wand and fix all that ails our great nation. That's right. For all that ails the USA, we are a great nation. Presidents change, but our greatness does not.
God Bless America and the new President.

Claudia,
This is how I feel about President Obama, as he is being put on a pedestal that he does not earned yet, and President Bush is dragged through the mud.
This is utterly foolish on the side of the American people and the MSM.
I have a feeling that when everything is said and done President Obama will end up dividing America much more that what the Democrats claimed Bush did.
To me President Obama seems as an arrogant individual. By making these attacks against President Bush during the inaugural address he set the tone for the type of administration that he intents to run, ruthless against anyone that stands on his path. Remember the statements that he made regarding Nancy Reagan on November 8 last year.
I have a feeling that it won’t be long before the honeymoon is over and he starts making bitter enemies in the political area.

You hit the nail on the head. That's precisely why he was shot to the stratosphere. But let me add, it wasn't the masses that did this, it was the mainstream media. Sadly, once the harmful anti-American MSM starts a campaign--either pro or con--the unthinking masses follow.
I think that this is one of the reasons why I am less than impressed by Obama. I have no doubt in my mind that if Obama had been a white man, he would never have been put on this pedestal that quite frankly he hasn't worked for. Can you imagine a white man going from a community activist with questionable ties and junior state senator to president in 4 years? He wouldn't even have made it past the democratic convention. In a sense Obama is our first affirmative action president. I wonder if the other more experienced candidates are bitter? McCain, for instance, seems like a good sport, but I would imagine that deep down inside he must feel a certain sting.
It was Obama's skin that made the media take note. I remember how they put him on a platter after his speech at the democratic national convention and started throwing his name around as a presidential candidate even back then!

I see I should read babalu from the bottom up from now on.
My comments above on the coverage of Mrs. Obama's wardrobe by the mainstream media are redundant to what you have said here. Sorry.
My friends are so ecstatic that we are free at last. How do you deal with such nonsense? I don't respond to it. But it is terrifying. I agree that Obama's sly put downs of Bush were tasteless. Before he puts down a man who freed so many people and gave so much aid to troubled nations and led us into a long healthy economy from his inherited bad one,(before he was confronted with a global economic disaster to deal with at the end of his term) let this president show us some achievement of his own.
Poor Israel, I fear, and poor Cuban people.

No politician of any party or affiliation should ever get credit for anything he or she hasn't actually delivered. Even a halfwit knows that what politicians say, especially their promises, should never be taken at face value, let alone counted on. Those who are already practically deifying Obama know this perfectly well, but of course they're simply following their agenda. The supposedly serious, responsible and (don't laugh) objective MSM is beneath contempt.
